When in 1950 two young Americans, Air Force pilot Michael Graham and jet setter Patsy Dazsel, saw it, they fell so much in love with this uncontaminated bay of the Argentario that they decided to build a luxury hotel there. Quickly this secret refuge overlooking the sea, surrounded by bougainvillea, olive trees, cypresses and oleanders became a cult place where movie stars and businessmen like Gianni Agnelli came to relax. The Pellicano maintains even today the same glamorous mood captured in Slim Aarons' shots. Among the many elements that keep it on the list of the Leading Hotels of the world are the refined elegance of the furnishings that include pieces by Gio Ponti and Fornasetti, a heated seawater swimming pool, a tennis court, a private beach, a spa, a Michelin Star restaurant and lovely terraced gardens from which to admire the beautiful Tuscan landscape.

Le Sirenuse is a true icon of Positano. It was in the '50s when it was the favorite destination of Sophia Loren and the Kennedy family and it still remains so today thanks to all the Instagram addicts who can't help but take pictures of it. Everything seems designed to make it irresistible: from the magical location overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea to the particular architecture that combines contrasts of white, red and green; from the majolica floors to the terrace overlooking the dome of the Cathedral, from the pool to the spa designed by Gae Aulenti, from the restaurant on the large panoramic terrace to the private beach. If these reasons are not enough for you to pack your suitcase for Positano, take a closer look at the images of the resort which seems to combine the blue of the sky and the sea or the garden of lemons, ferns, wisteria and bougainvillea that surround it. Now are you ready to spend your summer in one of the most beautiful luxury seafront hotels in Italy?

Just try to imagine that you are leaving the daily routine for a fishing village framed by colorful houses, relaxing on the shore of the blue sea, having a drink by the pool or enjoying a plate of spaghetti allo scoglio at the restaurant in the small square. Open your eyes and you will be in Portofino, at the Splendido Mare Hotel. The hotel was recently restyled with a maritime-inspired interior that mixes the cordage, brass and wood of the port with marble, fine fabrics and unique pieces created by Gio Ponti and Paolo Buffa.

A fun fact: the hotel's staff uniforms are by Arthur Arbesser.

The suites and villas designed by Luigi Vietti in the early '60s are the perfect combo of luxury resort, Mediterranean nature and privacy. All features appreciated by the Ferragnez family who stayed here with Leone last summer, enjoying these accommodation solutions that combine the green of the plants and the blue of the sea both outdoors and indoors. The plus? The swimming pool carved into the rocks that seems to blend with the private beach.

Torre Coccaro is a 16th-century farmhouse, a few steps from the sea, surrounded by ancient olive trees, almond and carob trees. Its unique location offers the best of both country life and seaside resort: Fasano is 5 km away, while a 15-minute bike ride will take you to the Adriatic Sea and the hotel's two private beach clubs. If you don’t want to laze around all day in your room or by one of the two beautiful swimming pools or sunbathe on the beach, you’ll find many other activities to do such as cooking classes, wine tasting or playing golf at the nearby golf club.

A few steps away from Savoca, the village where The Godfather was filmed, there is one of the most beautiful hotels in Sicily: Villa Sant'Andrea. Here, in this sophisticated retreat overlooking the Bay of Mazzarò and immersed in wonderful Mediterranean gardens, it feels as if you're in the English countryside by the Sicilian sea. This combination of different worlds was born from the union between the aesthetics wanted for the hotel by its founder, the engineer Robert Trewhella, and the lush nature typical of the island.

The history of this liberty-style villa set between the foot of Monte Pellegrino and the Gulf of Palermo is quite fascinating. At the beginning it was supposed to be a large sanatorium (the name in fact is a tribute to Hygiea, the goddess of health), then the Florio family changed their mind and decided to use the structure first as a private residence and, finally, commissioned the architect Ernesto Basile to turn it into a hotel. Since then Villa Igiea, with its sumptuous ballroom with its mirrors, colored majolica, vaulted stone ceilings and frescoes is an icon of luxury hospitality, the favorite spot of Hollywood stars and royal families. After a long and meticulous restoration, the structure is back to shine more beautifully than ever.

La Minervetta has lived twice. The first was in the 1950's when it was one of the most glamorous restaurants on the Sorrento coast, the second recently as a boutique hotel with a cozy and familiar atmosphere. The reasons that make it a little gem are many. The most obvious is its position, perched on the Borgo della Marina Grande. The others? The 12 rooms, all with breathtaking views of the bay of Naples and Vesuvius; the proximity to the beach (just 200 meters); the marinière furnishings filled with pieces collected from their travels and others created by great names in Italian and international interior design; the terrace with its Jacuzzi and lounge area with umbrellas, deck chairs and sofas.
