Gerard Way's eyeshadow is about to make a comeback Yes, we're talking about Gash by Urban Decay

My obsession with red eyeshadow began in 2005, when Gerard Way, frontman of My Chemical Romance, wore chin-length black hair and an eye look that ditched the usual smudged black eyeliner on the lower lash line in favor of color. The image is still vivid and crystal clear in my mind. A huge blood-red eyeshadow stain, ghostly pale foundation, black hair, and a black shirt with a red tie. The color scheme was as simple as it was evocative: white, black, and red. It was the emo era, the album everyone had on repeat was Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (the one with Helena, The Ghost of You, and I'm Not Okay (I Promise), just to be clear), and the hardest thing in my life was figuring out how to be as emo as possible at school and deciding whether I preferred Pete Wentz or, of course, Gerard Way, with whom I would have happily shared a makeup routine.

@shannon_said Gash, THE Gerard Way Revenge shadow, is officially coming back on May 29th! note: I accidentally misspoke, it's on Ulta's website, not UDs! second note: I am not sponsored or affiliated in any way with Urban Decay, I'm just really excited about this re release! #urbandecay #notsponsored #gerardway #mychemicalromance #mcr original sound - Shannon is a

Gash by Urban Decay, Gerard Way’s ultimate emo red eyeshadow

We didn’t know whether he had a makeup artist or if he simply applied his eyeshadow with his fingers (as some photos seemed to suggest, though maybe it was a carefully crafted effect), but the only thing we did know was that he wore Gash by Urban Decay, the perfect rust-red eyeshadow shade: not too bright, not too purple, not too brown, not too burgundy. The problem? It was discontinued in 2012, leaving an entire generation of emo girls devastated who, despite the band breaking up in 2013, would have gladly kept incorporating it into their looks, even at the office. Maybe just in a slightly more subtle way.

Does the return of red eyeshadow also mean the return of emo fashion?

For years, we searched for something even remotely similar. Alt makeup artists and emo baddies shared their dupes and secret tricks to recreate the look even without the original product. Well, more than 10 years later, Gash is back, and we’re still here with open arms, ready to buy it all over again. The announcement dropped just a few hours ago on Instagram, and the comments exploded. Hundreds of people mentioned Gerard Way, who undoubtedly helped make the memory of this product so enduring. Now all that’s left to do is wait until May 29, rush to the website, and bring emo music (and emo looks) back to life. Hopefully, it’ll be available in Europe too.
