All properties of Aleppo soap What is it and how to recognize real Syrian soap?

There’s one product that’s been part of my routine for so long, it’s hard to believe more people aren’t talking about it yet: Aleppo soap. I’ve been using it for at least five years and, even though I’ve tested everything: mousses, cleansing oils, foaming gels, I always find my way back to it. I actually discovered it by chance, among the many unique soaps my mom brought home from her fair trade shop. But from that first use, I’ve never looked back. And even if I’ve been low-key gatekeeping it until now, it’s finally time to share this little gem: here’s why Aleppo soap deserves a permanent spot in your bathroom.
Aleppo Soap: what it is and where it comes from
Aleppo soap is a natural soap originally from the Syrian city of the same name. It’s considered one of the oldest soaps in the world: according to an article from New Lines, some historians believe even Cleopatra and Queen Zenobia used it to care for their skin. Over time, it arrived in Europe with the Crusaders, and then spread worldwide thanks to Aleppo’s strategic location along the Silk Road. This soap is made from olive oil and laurel oil, and is still produced in Aleppo today following traditional methods.
All its benefits and uses
Aleppo soap offers so many benefits. Being a natural product, free from chemicals or fragrances, it’s perfect even for those with sensitive or delicate skin. Thanks to the olive oil, it helps keep the skin hydrated and soft, while laurel oil soothes and naturally fights bacteria. This makes it ideal for anyone dealing with irritation, acne, or conditions like eczema and psoriasis. In addition to being an excellent cleanser, it can also be used as a shaving foam helping soothe the skin during shaving or as a purifying shampoo. There are different types of Aleppo soap on the market, with laurel oil percentages ranging from 5% to 70%, depending on how you want to use it: lower concentrations are ideal for sensitive, reactive skin; higher ones offer stronger antibacterial action, perfect for acne-prone or eczema-affected skin.

Unfortunately, there are many fake soaps on the market claiming to be Aleppo soap. But with a bit of knowledge, you’ll be able to tell the real ones apart. First of all, it’s crucial to read the ingredients: the list should only include olive oil and laurel oil. If you spot other oils like shea, jojoba, or coconut, it’s not authentic Aleppo soap. The bar should have a light brown exterior and a green interior. As beauty creator Tatou explains on her TikTok channel, Aleppo soap needs to mature for at least 9 months: the more it ages, the more valuable it becomes.
