The active ingredients to stimulate hair growth No, rosemary isn't the only option

Between TikTok feeds full of miracle oils and girls claiming they’ve made their baby hairs grow back in three weeks thanks to a few scalp massages, figuring out what actually works for hair growth has basically become impossible. Scroll through social media and it feels like there’s a new revolutionary ingredient every day, always paired with suspiciously perfect before & after results. The truth, though, is that there is no magic active ingredient that suddenly turns your hair into a shampoo commercial. What does exist are more interesting ingredients than others, some supported by real studies, that can actually work on your hair. Here are the ones really worth looking for in haircare products.

The active ingredients to stimulate hair growth

Stemoxydine

Stemoxydine is an active ingredient developed by L’Oréal with the goal of reactivating dormant follicles, reducing the time between growth cycles and increasing overall hair density. In terms of research, there are some internal clinical studies showing a possible increase in density after several weeks of use. That said, stemoxydine is not marketed as a cure, but rather as an optimization of the hair growth cycle. It doesn’t promise instant results or rapid regrowth, but instead works by supporting and making the growth phase more efficient over time, especially when it’s naturally slow.

Caffeine

Caffeine has become a true haircare must-have, not just for your morning energy. Several studies, also reported by Healthline, suggest that when applied directly to the scalp it may interact with hair follicles. In simple terms, it seems to influence microcirculation and the signals that regulate the hair cycle, helping extend the growth phase known as anagen and stimulating follicle activity. It doesn’t replace medical treatments, but it’s definitely one of those actives worth trying when talking about hair growth support.

Peptides

It was only a matter of time before peptides made their way into haircare. In particular, copper peptides - which we’ve already talked about - often referred to as GHK-Cu, help stimulate the cells involved in hair growth and improve circulation around the follicle, creating a more favorable environment for regrowth.

Rosemary

Rosemary has become one of the biggest haircare stars of recent years, largely thanks to social media, which has turned it into a kind of “natural minoxidil” (a drug used for hair loss). The reality is a bit less dramatic. Some studies reported by Healthline suggest it may support hair growth and scalp health thanks to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, as well as a possible effect on circulation. However, the most cited study dates back to 2015, where rosemary oil was compared to 2% minoxidil in people with androgenetic alopecia. After six months, both groups showed improvement in hair growth, with rosemary being slightly better tolerated in terms of scalp irritation. That said, evidence is still limited and dated, which is why many dermatologists see it more as a scalp health support rather than a true regrowth treatment. In other words, it’s great for scalp care: it helps improve the skin, may reduce inflammation and dryness, and can support density, but don’t believe beauty creators who sell it as a miracle elixir that makes your hair grow ten centimeters a month.
