What is biotin and does it really work? Beyond hair, of course

When we want to strengthen our hair, one of the most well-known ingredients is undoubtedly biotin. Found in countless supplements dedicated to hair health, it is often associated with stronger nails and healthier-looking skin. But what does it actually do? And most importantly: can it really help?
What is biotin and what does it actually do?
What is biotin?
Let's start with the basics: biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a B-group vitamin that our body uses for several processes connected to the health of hair, skin, and nails. As explained by Healthline, biotin plays a role in processes that contribute to the production of keratin, a protein that is essential for the structure of hair and nails. This is exactly why, in the beauty world, it is mostly known for its promise of stronger, more resilient hair with a healthier appearance, as well as harder nails that are less prone to breaking and glowing skin.

So, can biotin actually help hair grow faster? As mentioned above, the main connection between this ingredient and hair health comes from its role in keratin production, which is essential for the structure of the hair fiber. However, as Healthline also points out, there is not enough scientific evidence to prove that taking biotin supplements promotes hair growth in people who do not have a deficiency of this vitamin. In other words, adding biotin to your routine does not automatically mean getting longer, thicker, or stronger hair. So, if your hair looks dull, weak, or tends to fall out, before relying entirely on a single supplement like biotin, it is important to consider other factors that can affect hair health, such as stress, hormonal changes, harsh treatments, or periods of increased fragility. Of course, the same rule applies to nails too.
Is taking biotin worth it?
At this point, the question naturally comes up: is it really worth adding a biotin supplement to your beauty routine? The answer is: it depends. In case of an actual deficiency, supplementing this vitamin can be helpful, but it is not an ingredient capable of completely transforming hair health on its own or solving every hair-related issue. For those who already get enough biotin through their diet, the effects of a supplement can be much more limited than expected. Taking more of it, in fact, does not automatically mean achieving longer, thicker, or shinier hair within a few weeks, as some social media videos often suggest.
