Love of your life, a guide on how to learn to (re) love yourself The protagonist is Margaret Qualley and the film is available on Prime Video
Love of Your Life is a very dramatic film. Very, very dramatic. Not only because of what he says, but because of how he tells it. Maya, played by Margaret Qualley, is a young nurse who knows the man of her dreams Charlie (Gabriel Basso) and is soon destined to lose him. The two live their way: walking through Boston's parks, getting married, surprising the whole family with a small reception at home, spending time sitting on the couch reading. Their daily lives are interrupted by Covid, which for the couple marks Charlie's departure. Tormented by feelings of guilt and unable to face a meaningful existence without her husband, Maya moves to Lisbon to get lost in fleeting encounters and one-night stands.
Love of your life, plot and review of the film on Prime Video
Love of your life does not escape any of the clichés, both narrative and atmospheric, that you would expect from a similar operation. He does not shy away from an easy tear and is not intimidated by the exasperation and explosion of feelings. This makes the Prime Video film honest in its intentions, even easy to reach an audience that appreciates romantic exaggerations, but who cannot be fooled into being unique and original, a copy of many other similar stories both read in books and taken to the cinema. Perhaps his greatest peculiarity is that the producers include Ryan Gosling, who, after all, since the days of Crazy, Stupid, Love and La La Land has known how to be a great romantic.
Even the journey of its director, Rachel Morrison, is more unpredictable than Love of Your Life. Having made a career as director of photography, the work is the second fictional feature film behind the camera after making The Fire Inside: Fight for Victory in 2024 on a screenplay by none other than Oscar winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If the Street Could Talk). While among the titles for which she is accredited as a DOP, there are some of the most important independent film debuts, such as Gia Coppola's Palo Alto (2013) and Next Stop Fruitvale Station (2013) by Ryan Coogler, with whom she will work for Black Panther five years later. A curious and varied journey that undoubtedly makes Morrison an interesting professional more than her film, written by Julia Cox and also in her second screenplay after debuting in 2023 with the biographical story of Diana Nyad in Nyad - Beyond the Ocean directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.
The message of a film that is not exactly unpredictable
The title of Prime Video with Qualley finds its most immediate and obvious location in the streaming container, and in fact it has easily conquered the first positions of the most watched films on the platform. For viewers, it's the promise of being able to dedicate themselves to something that seems new, but is actually very familiar and familiar. Which remains on the surface when she must delve into the restless state of mind of a young woman who was not looking for the man of her life and instead found him and then lost him. What at least passes and remains of Morrison's work, which gives an extra note of resourcefulness to the story, is how the resumption in hand of the reins of Maya's existence takes place entirely through a journey of listening and personal reconstruction, even if only mentioned and not who knows how much investigated. A way to show that we are the first to start from to face and digest the traumas that have marked us. And that running away from yourself is possible, but not indicated: the best cure sometimes lies in knowing how to stay.
