Patagonia presents Bamb'Amaza, a short documentary dedicated to the story of Othandwayo, a 12-year-old girl who lives in the working-class neighborhood of Imizamo Yethu, in Hout Bay, in South Africa. The short film accompanies her to the discovery of surfing and, through the board, on the path to a completely new way of experiencing the ocean.

The ocean is an unstoppable force. This is precisely why many of us are attracted to its untamable, wild and free energy. For Othandwayo, the ocean has always been a staple, but it is only thanks to surfing that he has learned to grasp its deepest aspects, far beyond the waves. Following the rhythm of the sea, she discovered her strength, determination and a community to which she belongs, aware that moving in harmony with the currents will help her overcome any obstacle.

Othandwayo got closer to surfing thanks to the Sentinel Ocean Alliance, an NGO active in Hout Bay that offers activities and educational programs related to the ocean to at-risk young people in South African coastal communities. With the mission of providing transformative paths and experiences related to the ocean within safe and inclusive spaces, Sentinel Ocean Alliance brings young people closer to the sea, promoting their well-being and helping them to become active protagonists in the protection of marine ecosystems. It is precisely this work that brings young people like Othandwayo closer to the ocean, and to make them discover a deep sense of belonging.
