Five European cities to reach by train to escape the heat and reduce your environmental impact Which destinations to choose for a cooler, less crowded summer

What if, this year, we chose the train for at least one of our trips? In recent years, rail transport has returned to the center of the debate on sustainable mobility, as the numbers clearly show that the railway is one of the least climate-impacting forms of transportation. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), rail transportation accounts for only 1% of global emissions from the transport sector, while representing around 7% of passenger travel worldwide. In addition, emissions per passenger are on average about five times lower than those generated by air travel. The European Environment Agency (EEA) also highlights that the train is the motorized means of transportation with the lowest emissions in Europe. A flight can produce five to ten times more CO₂ emissions than an equivalent journey by train, while the private car continues to generate significantly higher emissions, especially when only one person is traveling. What makes railways even more sustainable is the ongoing process of electrification. Today, more than 85% of global passenger rail traffic operates on electrified rail lines, increasingly powered by renewable energy sources.

Traveling by train is also economically convenient

The environmental aspect is not the only factor to consider. When booked in advance, train travel can also be competitive from a financial standpoint. Ticket prices often already include what typically incurs extra costs on airline flights: luggage, transfers to and from airports, and long waiting times. There is also another factor that is harder to quantify but increasingly appreciated: the journey itself. Traveling by rail allows passengers to move slowly through landscapes, observe changing territories, and experience transportation as an integral part of the trip rather than something to simply endure. In a Europe experiencing increasingly hot summers and periods of overtourism in its most popular destinations, choosing cities accessible by train also means embracing a more sustainable tourism model that is often more enjoyable and livable.

Five train-friendly destinations

Ljubljana, Slovenia

@nylah.akua First solo trip in the books! Here’s some fun stuff to do in Ljubljana, Slovenia #nylahstravels #ljubljana #slovenia original sound - Nylah Akua

Small, green, and crossed by the Ljubljanica River, Ljubljana is one of the most pleasant European cities to visit during the summer months. The historic center can easily be explored on foot, and its relaxed atmosphere makes it an excellent alternative to the continent’s larger capitals. From here, visitors can easily reach Lake Bled and the Karst caves, where temperatures generally remain cooler.

Lyon, France

@arieswang A tb to august this year, I fell in love with this city though #lyon #eurosummer #france #traveldiary #travelvlog Gold - Cleo Sol

Often overshadowed by Paris, Lyon offers an appealing balance between culture and quality of life. Despite being a major city, it maintains a slower pace and generally lower costs than many other French destinations. It is an ideal choice for travelers seeking a city break without giving up green spaces and vibrant neighborhoods.

Innsbruck, Austria

Surrounded by the Alps, Innsbruck is one of the best destinations for anyone looking to escape heat waves. Summer temperatures are milder than those in lowland cities, and it takes only a few minutes to go from the city center to mountain trails. Nature tourism and urban life coexist harmoniously, making it an especially versatile destination.

Menton, France

Thanks to the sea breeze and its location on the French Riviera, Menton often enjoys more comfortable conditions than many other Mediterranean destinations. Outside peak tourist periods, it can also be a relatively affordable destination and serves as an excellent base for exploring the charming villages of the surrounding countryside.

Trieste, Italy

@nancy.rssr welcome to trieste #italy #trieste #travel #fyp #sunset L'amore dice ciao (From "La matriarca - The Libertine") - Main Titles - Armando Trovajoli

It is one of Italy’s most underrated cities. The sea and the Bora wind help keep temperatures more manageable than in many other coastal locations, while the city’s relaxed pace and proximity to the Karst plateau allow visitors to alternate between urban walks, nature excursions, and days at the beach. It is an ideal destination for travelers seeking a slower, less crowded summer.

So, what do you think? Shall we give it a try?
