Everything we know about Jacob Elordi as Elvis The actor will play Presley in Sofia Coppola's new film

Do you remember Jacob Elordi and Kaia Gerber, while they were still going steady, dressed up as Elvis and Priscilla? Well, with hindsight, that picture from a few Halloweens ago can be interpreted as a kind of omen of what was to come years later. With the love story behind him, the model got engaged to another Elvis, Austin Butler, and the actor focused on his career, the new season of Euphoria and his next role: the King of rock'n roll in Sofia Coppola's new film.

Here's everything we know so far about the highly anticipated film, which marks the director's return after 2020's On the Rocks and sees Elordi try to surpass Butler's performance in Baz Luhrmann's movie.

Plot

If Luhrmann's project followed the story of the young Presley who became a legend as a boy through America in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and was told through the relationship between him and his manager, the despotic Colonel Tom Parker, the new film will focus on Priscilla Presley and her life as told in the memoir Elvis and Me written by Priscilla Beaulieu Presley herself. The description of the best-seller reads: "Decades after his death, millions of fans continue to worship Elvis the legend. But very few knew him as Elvis the man. Here in her own words, Priscilla Presley tells the story of their love, revealing the details of their first meeting, their marriage, their affairs, their divorce, and the unbreakable bond that has remained long after his tragic death." Elvis and Priscilla met at a party in 1959 when he was 23 and she was only 14, and were married in 1967 during which, amidst ups and downs, they had their daughter Lisa Marie. The relationship between the two and, above all, the figure of Priscilla will probably be at the centre of the screenplay, giving us a new perspective on a girl next door who finds herself thrust into the spotlight next to a legend, a complicated man adored by millions of fans.

Cast

The entire cast of the film, which for now has the working title Domino, has not yet been revealed. Only the main actors are known: Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny. Although the project seems to be focused on Priscilla, the curiosity is all about the star of Euphoria and whether or not he will be able to match Butler's performance as Elvis. At a superficial glance, Elordi seems less physically like Presley, but we are sure that the make-up will help him fit into the character who, he confessed in an interview, is one of his greatest inspirations: "Elvis Presley wanted to be James Dean. He wanted to be Marlon Brando. I've researched almost every actor from that time period, and I passed [Elvis] off as an entertainer and singer. But then he was an actor. I guess, in a way, I'm trying to learn from these people. Because I obviously don't have any friends that have been through the same thing, really, so they're almost like guiding beacons."

Jacob will share the screen with Cailee Spaeny, in the role of Priscilla Presley. This is a great opportunity for the young American actress who only started her career a few years ago. Where have we seen her? She has starred in science fiction films such as Pacific Rim: Uprising and The Craft: Legacy, in On the Basis of Sex, a biopic based on the life and early cases of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and in Vice opposite Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Steve Carell.

Filming

Announced at the end of the summer, filming of Sofia Coppola's film began this autumn and is underway in Toronto, as shown by stolen set photos that have appeared online showing us the first images of Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny as Elvis and Priscilla. The two sport backcombed hairstyles and looks in full late 1950s-early 1960s style, designed by costume designer Stacey Battat. If you want to find out some more details about the project, which still has no official release date but is known to be distributed in the US by A24, follow Sofia Coppola's Instagram profile. The director has just joined the social network and has so far posted some images of the script, the shoes Priscilla will wear and shared the playlist the crew listens to before filming, a list of tracks that includes Prince, Kool & the Gang and New Order, but, strangely, no Elvis hits.
