Do you prefer Zendaya's sun kissed beauty or Gigi Hadid's 1940s hairstyle?
May 6th, 2025
The most anticipated fashion event of the year has finally arrived. The 2025 Met Gala, held as always at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, celebrated the opening of the exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, with a refined and powerful focus on Black dandyism. To honor the theme, celebrities from every corner of pop culture walked the blue carpet, icons like Madonna and Diana Ross, Gen Z favorites such as Hunter Schafer, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, music and film stars like Lorde, Chappell Roan, Zendaya, Jenna Ortega e Aimee Lou Wood, and beloved transgenerational celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, and Pamela Anderson. Not to be missed were the trendsetting girls of the moment, Kylie Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Kim Kardashian. From Rihanna, spotted leaving the Carlyle Hotel in a Miu Miu gown (then wore a custom Marc Jacobs), who revealed her pregnancy to everyone’s surprise, to Teyana Taylor, in a suit she designed herself in collaboration with Marc Jacobs and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, all guests interpreted the Tailored for You dress code in their own way—without neglecting the importance of beauty.
The best beauty moments of the 2025 Met Gala
New Haircuts
The Met Gala has historically been a stage for stunning transformations, and this year was no exception. Among the most powerful hair surprises, Pamela Anderson debuted a retro bob with micro bangs, directly evoking the 1920s but with a soft and modern twist: flapper waves, matte texture, and barely-there make-up. A quiet beauty that contrasts with the red carpet's glitz, reaffirming her make-under manifesto. Oscar winner Zoë Saldaña chose an equally striking look: a glossy bob with blunt bangs, sculpted with precision and polished like a jewel by Mara Roszak. A strategic cut that highlights her cheekbones and gaze, perfect alongside glowy skin and glossy lipstick applied by makeup artist Vera Steimberg. Emma Chamberlain went for a platinum blonde pixie cut—severe yet theatrical—balancing the noir romanticism of her dramatic make-up featuring violet “undereye blush” and a three-dimensional smoky eye. The look, by Lily Keys, was described as “timeless with a vampy, modern edge.” Emma paired it with a modern Courrèges take on masculine tailoring reimagined for women. Nicole Kidman also debuted a new pixie cut, stunning in a total black ‘50s-inspired look by Balenciaga. Tyla went blonde in Jacquemus with a fresh, neutral makeup look and blonde pixie, while Lizzo matched her platinum hair with dark lipstick.
Kiss Curls: The Baby Hair Comeback
The true beauty highlight of 2025? The kiss curl—a decorative yet historically rich beauty detail. Dua Lipa, divine in Chanel, elevated the look with four perfectly sculpted kiss curls across her forehead, paired with a sleek chignon and dark-glam make-up flirting with gothic tones. A flapper look reinterpreted with couture flair, hand in hand with Callum Turner in a dandy suit. Sydney Sweeney paid homage to Kim Novak, sporting a vintage look with three glossy curls framing her forehead and a subtle side part, crafted by hairstylist Glen Oropeza using FHI Heat. Her crystal-studded black gown, cinematic references, and hyper-romantic Armani Beauty makeup completed a look that whispered pure glamour. Angel Reese and Simone Biles reimagined kiss curls with sporty, powerful femininity—both chose a single curl and deep side part, with sculpted waves and dramatic eyes. Biles, in particular, honored Josephine Baker with a glossy bob, defined baby hair, and theatrical lashes by Lily Lashes. Ayo Edebiri, styled by Jacob Aaron with OGX products, wore a more subtle kiss curl, pulled back into a sleek chignon, paired with a neutral smokey eye and perfectly outlined lips—flawlessly matching her Ferragamo dress. Honorable mention goes to Bad Bunny, who wore a kiss curl and mini pava hat, blending 1920s style with Puerto Rican folklore.
Maximalism vs Minimalism
This year's Met showcased a stark divide between two opposing beauty philosophies. On one side, maximalism reigned with Chappell Roan choosing shocking pink with glittering accents in both fashion and beauty, and Doja Cat rocking an Afro Mohawk, lilac eyeshadow extending to the brow bone, and bold red lips. Teyana Taylor also embraced the more-is-more vibe: under a feathered burgundy hat and matching silk scarf, her stunning curls peeked out, complemented by bronzed makeup and sultry smokey eyes. And what about Doechii in custom Louis Vuitton, complete with the “LV” logo delicately printed on her cheek and a gorgeous natural afro hairstyle? On the other side stood the minimalists: Lorde, and Miley Cyrus—who ditched her Tina Turner-inspired volume for a sleek blowout—and Aimee Lou Wood, at her first Met Gala with an androgynous glam look featuring gel-sculpted hair and eyeliner-focused eyes. Hunter Schafer’s look was equally delicate and refined: false lashes, rosy blush, glossy pink lips, and a neat chignon.
Old Hollywood & Tributes to the Past
Many of the night’s looks drew inspiration from cinematic and musical icons of the 20th century. Sydney Sweeney evoked Kim Novak and Joan Crawford; Megan Thee Stallion channeled Josephine Baker. Tyla resurrected Dorothy Dandridge’s sophisticated sensuality with a golden pixie and sparkling neutral make-up, while Emma Chamberlain bridged Courrèges and 1920s femme fatales. Gigi Hadid stunned in a gold sequin-and-crystal-covered Miu Miu dress—a tribute to designer Zelda Barbour Wynn Valdes, the first Black woman to open her own store in New York in 1948. Her hairstyle by Dimitris Giannetos featured large victory rolls inspired by ‘40s glamour. And Zendaya? In a flawless Zoot Suit, she reinterpreted the 1970s through the lens of Black American tailoring. Her look was a visual collage—every element from the oversized hat to sculpted lips told a story. Under the cream-brimmed hat, the star revealed bronzed cheeks and nude ombré lips created by Ernesto Casillas using Charlotte Tilbury’s Super Nudes Shapewear Lip Cheat and Big Lip Plumpgasm in Nudegasm Diamonds for a plump, luminous finish.
