In the past few years, what we’re defining as “men’s fashion” and “women’s fashion” is changing, shifting towards a gender-less approach to fashion. Icons such as Billy Porter, Harry Styles, and Cara Delevigne have been leading this charge, wearing garments not “traditionally” made for the opposite gender. But what does this mean for our closets?

Looking at influencers such as Francesco Cicconetti, we can see that our wardrobes are also becoming more fluid. For example, Francesco lives together with his partner, Chiara. The couple share everything — from sunglasses to jackets and everything in between — creating a shared wardrobe that is built off of not only each individuals personal style, but their style as a couple.

When we start to look at our wardrobes as something communal, that you’re sharing with a partner or even a roommate, there’s more incentive to be considerate and thoughtful with the pieces you bring in. While not every purchase decision needs to be made in consultation with your partner, it’s romantic to build something together, having open conversations about what might add to your life, and  jointly saving up enough to invest in higher-quality garments.

Through this context, it’s easy to become more creative with your style and personal expression. When you break free from the idea of “men’s” vs “women’s” fashion, you’re left with a world of possibilities — mixing and matching from each “gender” of fashion to create something entirely unique. Don’t be afraid to mix a ruffled dress with a metal belt and button-down. Your style should always be more than just keeping up with the trends; it’s a representation of yourself.

When we look at our wardrobes as something we share with our partner, our outfits not only become a reflection of ourselves, but of our relationship. You can think of curating your perfect couples-wardrobe like building your relationship, deciding on your joint style to create a physical representation of your relationship. In a way, it’s a reminder everyday of who you are as well as the love you have for your partner.

But what about if you stop seeing each other? Well, even Barbie and Ken broke-up. It’s normal, but what do you do when not only your entire life is intertwined, but your wardrobe and sense of self expression is as well? It’s important to know how you’ll separate your wardrobe if the time ever comes where you and your partner split up, deciding together what each person wants before there relationship issues occur.

Overall, living with your partner is more than just a “relationship step;” its’ the merging of two lives. Of course, one of the best things about living with your partner is the ability to swap clothing, however there’s an opportunity to do more than just exchange a few pieces here and there. There’s an opportunity to build something together, that you both interact with everyday as a representation of who you both are, individually and together.
