“I am for the most total imperfection” Interview with Evissimax
Before the summer break, during one of the last days in an endless and very hot Milan, we met Evissimax for our Confessions format. Its presence, despite the heat, brings a breath of freshness. Evissimax speaks very quickly but knows very well what it means, and answers our questions with fun and with a touch of candor that makes it even more refreshing.
Interview with Evissimax on the new single b00tycall (and not only)
Equally refreshing is the release of his new track, b00tycall, which describes us as a track with a very specific objective: “What I want to convey is the sense of a carefree and fun summer, full of booty calls! We are certainly living in very dark times, and with my music and DJ sets - especially with b00tycall and SCM, two singles released this summer - I wanted to convey a bit of lightness. For what we can do in our small way, I wanted to remind those who are privileged enough to have this lightheartedness to really enjoy it to the full. This song is for the gays!” concludes Evissimax.
The ghetto-techno according to Evissimax
“If I had to describe myself to someone at 4 in the morning outside a club, I would say that I am intense, sexy, too emotional, fun. I'm a Scorpio,” he says, and smiles. So intense that, after a particularly demanding set, she no longer hears anything: “I don't want to hear anything, I want silence,” she explains. “Those few times when maybe I'm in a hotel room and I want to relax, then I listen to The Spaceape, or Soulsavers.” Its sound is ghetto-techno, but what does it mean? Let us explain it directly from her: “I start from the tech ghetto, a genre born between Chicago and the United Kingdom, a cross between techno and footwork that derives from the Chicago House. It is a very fast sound, traveling at 160 BPM, but it remains super fun and bouncy because it often samples and edits of R&B, hip-hop and rap tracks. I push a little harder, I put the emphasis on the techno part, I even reach 170 BPM and mix it with acid techno, groove, hardcore rave, Gabber... I don't want to limit myself or lock myself in a box at the gender level. I like to experiment.”
Different genres, all mixed without limits, which are also reflected in her musical formation, in the coffers of her family, in her origins, in the music with which she grew up: “For me, family is the basis of everything,” she admits, and then adds: “On my mother's side, I grew up listening to hip-hop, R&B and the queens of soul and neo-soul; my father gave me more of a culture of Italian singer-songwriter and rock. So I start from Ghetto Tech but then I mix techno with rap, afro-tech, jersey, afrobeats... and I'm also a huge fan of euro-trash, eurodance and electro-pop. Those sounds, if you know them, you can find them a lot in my DJ sets.”
The future of Evissimax (and its beauty secret)
Seeing her so sure, it's impossible not to ask her what she hopes a girl will take with her after seeing her play. The answer is full of ideas: “I am for the most total imperfection: I want to see people who dance, sweat, have fun, scream, fall! When at the end of the evening girls come to me who have been wild for hours and who have reviewed themselves in what I do, in what I play and in what they are, for me it is the best. Being born as a very shy girl, it gives me great pleasure if someone, after one of my sets, feels compelled to be more of themselves.” Message that is further reinforced: “To the shy me of the past, I would say to take life without unnecessary paranoia. I am in control of how I take things and how I live them: since I really understood it, my life has changed.” Its beauty secret, in fact, is authenticity. Consistent, isn't it?
Let's go back to Earth and close with our usual question about the future. “I expect a lot of music, a lot of collaborations and a lot of trips!” answers. “I'm working on an EP with a wonderful Ugandan producer and I want to bring an afro-techno sound that's always a little unexpected.”
