
Sun protection: chemical or mineral? Discover the differences and choose the right one for you

When it comes to sun protection, we often focus solely on the SPF number, forgetting that there are two main categories of sunscreen filters: chemical and mineral filters. What’s the difference between the two? And which one is better for your skin? Let us break it down for you in this article!
What is chemical sunscreen?
Chemical filters contain active ingredients, such as oxybenzone and avobenzone, that absorb UV rays like a sponge, preventing them from damaging the skin. They spread easily, absorb quickly, and don’t leave the classic white cast. For this reason, they’re often preferred in makeup and facial sunscreens. They need around 20–30 minutes to activate, so they should be applied before sun exposure. People with sensitive or acne-prone skin may find these filters a bit irritating, especially with daily use.
What is mineral sunscreen?
Mineral filters, on the other hand, work differently: they reflect UV rays like a shield. The two main ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which form a barrier between the skin and the sun. They’re a great choice for sensitive skin because they tend to cause less irritation. They work immediately, so there’s no need to wait before heading outside, unlike chemical filters. The only downside is they can leave a slight white cast on the skin, although many modern formulas are now lighter and more transparent, making them perfect even under makeup.
So, which sunscreen should you choose?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer: it all depends on your skin type, your lifestyle, and your personal preferences. If you want a light, invisible sunscreen that works well under makeup, a chemical filter might be the most convenient option for you. If your skin is sensitive or you’re planning to spend a full day in the sun - like at the beach or on a hike - then mineral filters are ideal: gentle and protective from the start. The most important thing is to never skip sunscreen. Applying it every morning is one of the simplest ways to take care of your skin.
