The benefits of peppermint essential oil
A remedy for hair health

May 28th, 2025
Hair is a bit like our business card: it speaks before we even open our mouths. Through our hair, we can express who we are, tell our story, and reflect our personality and style. That’s why taking care of our hair is just as important as taking care of our skin. Both deserve attention, consistency, and the right allies and one in particular has been gaining increasing attention in haircare routines: peppermint oil. From social media to the #hairtok community, it’s being hailed as one of the most effective natural oils to stimulate hair growth and improve scalp health. But what are its real benefits?

Peppermint essential oil has been used for centuries thanks to its incredible healing properties. In Ancient Egypt, it was considered a sacred plant: priests used it in special ointments called kifi, believing it promoted mental clarity and longevity. The Greeks and Romans were also well aware of its benefits: they used peppermint leaves to aid digestion and as a toning and relaxing remedy. In short, a true elixir of well-being.
Haircare benefits of peppermint oil
Today, peppermint has become a must-have in haircare, thanks to its well-known properties. Its main component, menthol, helps to stimulate scalp circulation, increasing the flow of nutrients to hair follicles and supporting stronger, healthier hair growth. A 2014 study published on PubMed Central showed that regular use of peppermint oil can increase both the number and depth of hair follicles and extend the growth phase of the hair cycle. However, it's important to be realistic: as dermatologist Ryan Turner: "The human body cannot create new follicles. Once a follicle is dead, it can no longer produce hair." So, if you're hoping for miraculous regrowth in areas with no living follicles, peppermint oil, unfortunately, can’t perform magic. Still, it can do a lot to strengthen and stimulate those that are still active, helping you achieve healthier, stronger, and more vibrant hair. But that’s not all! Thanks to its antibacterial and antifungal properties, peppermint oil is a powerful ally in keeping the scalp clean and healthy, protecting it from dandruff, irritation, and other skin issues. If you have an oily scalp, it’s ideal because it helps regulate sebum production, while its soothing and calming effect is great for relieving itchiness or redness. Finally, being rich in antioxidants, it also protects your hair from damage caused by pollution and UV rays.

Essential oils are powerful and packed with benefits, but they must be used with care. Because they are highly concentrated, applying them directly to the skin or scalp may cause irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. To avoid any issues, it’s always best to dilute them. You can do this by mixing the essential oil with water or with more gentle carrier oils like jojoba or argan oil. These not only help distribute the product more evenly but also nourish and hydrate the skin, leaving it soft and protected. It’s also recommended to use these products one or two times a week, especially for those with delicate skin.
