Brenda Asnicar's rebirth from Disney icon to Bandida Interview with Brenda Asnicar
In 2007, I was a ten-year-old girl whose typical afternoon looked like homework, rhythmic gymnastics and a Nutella sandwich savoured while watching Disney Channel. My grandmother had Beautiful, I had Patty's World. I was totally fascinated by it, from the theme song to the choreography to the drama and the songs. The Argentinian telenovela was the mix that fuelled my imagination of the outside world. The perfect Bible for finding out everything there is to know about fights, love affairs, cool and lame outfits, goddess-like girls and popular ones. Fifteen years later, with the same dreamy eyes, I find myself asking Brenda Asnicar how she is able to manage her skincare, her loves, her future and her new album “Bandida”. «When I started my independent career, I knew I wanted to build everything myself, write my own songs, think about who I would collaborate with and what I wanted to say. I wanted girls to know Brenda, not just as Antonella or as the characters I played.»

Versatile Argentine artist Brenda Asnicar was born in Buenos Aires in 1991, and spent her childhood in a family environment dominated by the arts. Her brother is both a well-known musician and an established film director, holding a leading position in a company specialising in digital animation. Ever since her early childhood, Brenda Asnicar has shown a keen interest in the world of entertainment and attended the Italian Cultural Centre at Villa Adelina, where she perfected her Italian and English skills. «I have a strong connection to Italy. My paternal great-grandfather was born in Regato Terme in Vicenza. So the Asnicar surname comes from Veneto. I love Italian culture, I love the food and the people. For me it was like a dream come true to come back this time and perform the new Bandida Records songs. I'm experiencing a new stage in my life and in my career, and I'm getting so much love. So I want to thank Italy again, because Italy is an important part of my life.»
Brenda started taking singing lessons when she was still a child and made her television debut on the reality show Cantaniño at the age of eleven, initially as a chorus singer. She later successfully hosted two TV shows, including Chicos Argentinos alongside Pablo Arias. «It's not always easy to start working so early, but for me it was great because I always saw it as a passion and not a job. As time went on, of course, the rhythms became more demanding and I had a lot of responsibility. There were times when I had a lot to do and my life was not the same as my classmates. But I still feel happy because I was able to do what I dreamed of.»

Then came Antonella, the role that made her absolutely famous. «Antonella was an opportunity for me to do justice. I was inspired by the people who hurt me as a young girl at school and I created my character based on that kind of personality. The play was about bullying as an issue that affects all of us and our society. But over the course of the various episodes and as the plot developed, the character changes considerably. From the beginning, it didn't seem right to me to take Antonella seriously. That's why I added a lot of humour instead of portraying her as a villain. I was a bit scared because the evil character doesn't always get a lot of love, but I think the most important thing about Antonella is that she is funny. Those elements were the key to success: the love and the banter

But it is thanks to her wonderful voice and songs that are still etched in our hearts - and in my mind as I write this interview - that Brenda Asnicar has solidified her singing career. «For me, “Bandida” is like an identity card. I believe that people who read my songs can get to know me better, that's the main goal of making songs. I will always love Antonella and my role in Cumbia Ninja. I like being an actress, but music is my true passion and I don't want to just play it anymore, I want it to be real.» Today, Brenda Asnicar posts on her Instagram account her thoughts as she shares insights into her life with her 1,3 million followers. Long chocolate coloured hair and eyes etched in our memories. She continues to travel the world with her music and in the meantime continues to work on her songs: Her single “Guerrera” was a huge success. «Guerrera is a very important song for me. I started writing it in 2020, a very difficult year for me because of the pandemic and the death of my grandmother, who died while I was finishing the song. I dedicated it to her because I owe everything to her. She was the one who paid for my dance lessons when I was a kid, she was the first one to celebrate every one of my successes, every song, every episode, she was always there.» To date, the Argentine singer and actress does not seem to have a lover. She is focused on her career and has no love interests or flirtations at the moment. «My relationship with my fans is of utmost importance. When I'm sad or can't find motivation, they’re always able to pick me up. They are my salvation. Without them, there is nothing. I always say that they are the light in my darkness.»
