Thierry Mugler's most iconic garments and must-haves from the collaboration with H&M

Guide to not being unprepared for the launch of the new Mugler x H&M collection

Thierry Mugler's most iconic garments and must-haves from the collaboration with H&M Guide to not being unprepared for the launch of the new Mugler x H&M collection

Thierry Mugler is the visionary French fashion designer who died in 2022. He first brought artful garments to the fashion scene in the 1980s, drawing inspiration from 1970s cars, film noir and even the world of insects. When we stand in front of one of her creations, we understand that it was designed for a femme fatale who has no inhibitions and is ready to take the limelight.

A word from Mugler

In one of his interviews for Vogue, he reveals the vision behind his work, "I have always worked to make women feel powerful" and that from a young age he not only sewed his own clothes, but also designed and finished costumes for fictional heroines he wrote and whose powers and destinies he determined. in 1995, Mugler presented a collection of various garments inspired by the comic book heroine Wonder Woman at the famous fashion show FW, recreating a golden, stiff uniform that was later used by Lindy Hemming as the model for the structure of the costume worn by Gal Gadot in the 2021 film "Wonder Woman: 1984"

His garments are always recognisable because they feature luxurious colours like gold, but also deep black with the iconic transparent inserts that are presented again in the collection in collaboration with the Spanish giant H&M, or others that transform the model who wears them into a precious and statuesque sculpture that borders on the human: an angelic woman, a warrior, a woman who conveys strength and sensuality without denaturalising the feminine power she naturally exudes. Mugler, a genius of form and experimentation, brought iconic and impressive creations to the French catwalks.

The stars who love Mugler

Beloved by celebrities, he has always been one of the most highly rated designers for the red carpets of the most mundane events. He has dressed icons of all kinds, from Cardi B to Irina Shayk, Kim Kardashian to Rihanna and Naomi Watts. A guarantee of elegance and a mix of surprise. Mugler's signature archive pieces have stolen the show at the most memorable soirees of the last 30 years and will continue to offer a glimpse of the dreamlike dimension the modern woman dreams of. It is difficult to remember a specific garment, but on the other hand, it is not difficult to recognise Thierry's footprints in the competitive world of the fashion system.

The collection

The proposed collection with H&M, which has been announced for months but will only be released tomorrow, 11 May 2023, is exactly what we wanted. Contrary to initial rumours that it would be a total failure given the obvious discrepancy between the two worlds, we have to give the fast fashion brand credit for entering into numerous collaborations with big names in the fashion industry over the years, to name a few: Kenzo, Jimmy Choo, Versace and Lanvin. The gap between the luxury world and the more affordable world is often unbridgeable, leaving a large portion of the population with only the desire to rely on poorly made and poorly produced duplicates, so our hype for the collabo is more than justified.

Casey Cadwallader, the current artistic director of the Mugler brand, announced that he wanted to pay homage to Mugler's history and archive as faithfully as possible and present a typically contemporary collection with futuristic touches. The promise was kept. From the previews we were shown, it is clear that the brand's trademarks have remained intact: oversized shoulder pads, a beautifully defined waist, the famous meshes that allow a glimpse of skin, both in the blazers and in the nylon jeans and trousers. Very important is also the focus on non-standard sizes that we could find in the collection to increase usability and draw attention to the issue of discrimination.

Mugler x HM: the price range

As we can see with our own eyes, the items available for purchase are really numerous and the prices range on average from a minimum of 60 euros to a maximum of 300 euros, except for the leather trench coats. Above all, those who follow the brand's style codes more attentively should not miss the famous corset blazer, whose design is very similar to the original, and the leggings with the ubiquitous spiral multiple seams. Given the current trend for tight-fitting bodysuits and mesh, we definitely recommend not missing this catsuit as it is one of the top items of the collabo.

Not forgetting the accessories, which pick up the famous square star for earrings to the silver M for belts or bags. A 100 per cent complete collection, in fact, the combination was not welcomed by all, leaving some wondering if it was still worth buying the selected piece(s) directly from Mugler at this point. What attracted a lot of attention were some "remakes" of iconic garments that, strictly speaking, we have already seen on the catwalk. And it is this similarity that has angered some admirers of the brand. On the contrary, H&M has long followed its motto of democratising fashion, as announced earlier in this article: the first step was taken in 2004 with Karl Lagerfeld for a capsule collection. In any case, you still have a few hours to decide what to go for before everything is sold out. Time enough to get your thoughts in order or mark the looks you definitely do not want to miss.
