The most expensive Birkin bag by Hermès in the world

On September 26, during an online auction led by Dame Brigitte Kruse, founder of Kruse GWS Auctions, an Hermès Birkin bag was sold for the record price of $287,500. It is a black crocodile model with white gold details and a shower of 10.7-carat diamonds. The extra detail that makes the bag even more special? It has never been used.

During the same event it was possible to buy a Ford 2016 Shelby GT-H 50th Anniversary Hertz Rent-a-Racer Edition and a 1979 gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, but nothing caught the attention like the Birkin. After all, it is also remembered in a famous episode of Sex & the City: "It's not a bag. It's a Birkin!". This is what the salesman answers when Samantha Jones gasps when she discovers that she has to wait five years to hold the it-bag in her hands.

Jean-Louis Dumas, president of Hermès, designed the bag after listening to Jane Birkin, sitting next to him during a Paris-London flight, complaining that she couldn't find a bag for her needs as a young mother.  But he probably never imagined the huge success of this handmade bag either. There is something in Hermès' Birkin that is absolutely irresistible. A particular je ne sais quoi that turns it into one of the most coveted luxury items of all time. Every celebrity owns at least one: Kylie Jenner matches it with nail art, Olivia Palermo wears it all the time, Cardi B has customized one with paisley print and Victoria Beckham owns so many of them that she is called The Birkin Queen.
