End-of-season decluttering: what to throw away, what to use up, and what to stop buying Some tips to make tidying up easier

September is the perfect time to tackle a general decluttering. And the beauty case is no exception. Because with the next change of season, it will also be time to figure out what really deserves to come with us into fall. Between products that have been open for months, impulse purchases and cosmetics we keep around just in case, we often accumulate far more than we actually need. What should we throw away? What can we finally finish? And, most importantly, what can we stop buying?

End-of-season decluttering: what to throw away, what to finish and what to stop buying

What to throw away

@maysosour È arrivata la deadline. Questi prodotti li avevo messi in una lista “sotto osservazione” a Natale. È arrivato il verdetto!! #CapCut #makeup #decluttering #frugalchic #deinfluence audio originale - maysosour

Let’s start with the products that it’s time to get rid of. If a cosmetic has changed smell, colour or texture, I’d say there’s no question about it: it shouldn’t be used anymore. To understand how long we have after opening a product, we can also check the PAO, that little open-jar symbol on the packaging: it indicates how many months the product can be used once opened. Sorry for the pun, but pay particular attention to eye products, such as mascara or eyeliner, which come into direct contact with a particularly delicate area. If they have been open for too long, have dried out or changed texture, it’s better to throw them away. Then there are the products that haven’t expired, but we already know we won’t use. A foundation in the wrong shade, a lipstick that looks absolutely terrible on us, an eyeshadow that’s simply too bright. If the product is still intact, we can give it to a friend or pass it on to our mum, who will always happily accept pretty much anything. If it’s old or no longer in the best condition, though, it’s simply time to let it go.

What to finish

In a nutshell: everything that’s left. Once we’ve got rid of everything we no longer need, and especially after seeing how much stuff we’ve bought and never actually used disappear into the bin or end up in someone else’s hands, let’s take a moment to focus on what we’ve decided to keep and actually try to use it. Before buying a new lip liner, a blush or a lipstick, let’s check what we already have open in our beauty case: we often end up with three similar products that we’ve started but never finished. We’re living in the middle of consumerism: we constantly buy something new, even when we already have everything we need. So before our next purchase, let’s stop for a second and ask ourselves whether we really need it. If it helps, challenge yourself: Project Pan was created for exactly this reason.

What to stop buying

@mybeautydiary0 Just finished moving back home and organizing and this is so satisfying to me so I had to share #projectpan #declutter #fragrance #makeup #skincare original sound - HOPECORE APP

If we take a good look at our beauty collection, we often realise we have plenty of very similar shades, impulse purchases we ended up regretting or products we can’t even remember why we bought in the first place. But do we really need all of these products? The idea, ultimately, is to end up with a beauty case filled only with products we genuinely love. The ones we use practically every day, know inside out and that actually work for us. Everything else can stay on the shelves. Maybe the simplest way to figure out what to stop buying is exactly this: ask ourselves whether, once we finished it, we would buy it again.
