Social freezing, commonly known as egg freezing or oocyte freezing for social reasons, is a medical procedure that allows women to take and freeze their eggs at a young age, preserving their fertility in order to seek a pregnancy later in life, regardless of biological or personal reasons. An increasingly hot topic involves young girls and young adults, who would like to do it but often don't know where to start or fear they can't afford it.

For this reason, as part of Ciaomondo's Milan Wellness Week, a meeting was held on the subject. The talk, which took place in the Chapters spaces and moderated by nss g-club, featured MeggyCare, the first community in Italy dedicated to social freezing, and Marta Nicolazzi, sociologist, partner of Eva in Rosso, founder of the collective-observatory We Are Fresh and promoter of the campaign “Let's freeze eggs, not rights”. The meeting offered a space for women's information and education focused on rights and freedom of reproductive choice, allowing them to deepen what it really meant to freeze their eggs: from the medical implications, times and costs, to the cultural and political value of a choice capable of concerning the body and the future of every woman.

A positive surprise was the extreme participation of the public, who immediately asked questions and doubts, but who also brought their own experiences. The talk, from a “frontal” lesson with the experts, has therefore turned into an open exchange without taboos, in which girls of different ages and with a different experience were able to ask and tell. There was no lack of enlargement of the context. The panelists, in fact, touched on various topics beyond social freezing per se, moving from motherhood to menopause, opening a glimpse into a fast and problematized society, in which becoming a mother is a complex choice that cannot be left only to heterosexual couples and where doctors should first and foremost receive adequate training to face new challenges and new situations and cases.
