Watching A Very Jonas Christmas Movie was not what we expected. Released on Disney+ on November 14th, the film is a fanservice operation that follows the most famous musical brothers’ trio in the world who, as in every Christmas story – as they ironically point out – must desperately find a way to get home in time for the holidays. Everything is coordinated with the release of a Christmas songs album, which enriches the movie with musical moments while contributing to a mutual film promotion strategy. Surprisingly, however, the movie turned out to be more enjoyable than expected. A fun watch that can appeal even to non-fans, especially if they have even a basic knowledge of the band, with the Jonas Brothers showing how accustomed they are to performing and how at ease they are in front of the camera.
A Very Jonas Christmas Movie: plot and cast
In A Very Jonas Christmas Movie, Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas, and Nick Jonas play Kevin, Joe, and Nick. The trio has just wrapped up a world tour that took them away from their families, and they are eager to return home to take a break and spend time apart from each other. The movie focuses on sibling rivalry, with an unlikely Santa Claus played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who casts a spell on them, making their journey home more complicated and forcing them to spend time together to overcome their issues. Directed by Jessica Yu, who perfectly captures the group's humor, the film allows them to express themselves with freedom, while the screenplay by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger highlights the key personality traits that define them, but also their desire to grow and evolve.
Self-irony and biographical references
This makes the trio particularly self-ironic, playing with the various rumors that have circulated over their long career, reflecting on the fact that they have been famous since they were very young and that their work has always included a strong family element. The film is, of course, fictional, and never tries to present what appears on screen as truly authentic. While Kevin Jonas and Nick Jonas involve their real-life partners Danielle Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, Joe Jonas is given a romantic subplot involving an old acquaintance from his childhood.Partly so as not to leave him out, in the spirit of the holidays, and partly to enrich the plot of A Very Jonas Christmas Movie. But it is commendable that, despite carrying such personal baggage, the film does not shy away from highlighting how we are all aware of the gossip that has circulated around the trio and, in Joe's case, the difficult legal battle with the mother of his daughters, Sophie Turner, and the formalization of their divorce a year ago. Out of respect (and perhaps also for legal reasons?), the actress from Game of Thrones is never mentioned openly, but it is implied that when you are famous, it is obvious who you have dated and, probably, how it ended.
Why watch the Disney+ movie?
Light-hearted, pleasant and charming like a Christmas song, A Very Jonas Christmas Movie is the unexpected treat in the Advent calendar that surprises you. You don’t expect it to be satisfying, yet it turns out to be a harmless but fun little delight. A production that seems to have spared no expense, or perhaps Will Ferrell, who opens and closes the film, is simply a huge Jonas Brothers fan.
