2006 – Dash

Dash Boutique in Calabasas, California, was where it all began for the three K sisters in 2006. The boutique, which is described as a luxury boutique, has displayed a curated selection of clothing and accessories and expanded to several locations, including Miami and Manhattan, in its 12 years of existence. The business was co-founded by Kim, Khloé and Kourtney and was the sisters' first shop, mentioned in many of the first episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. The business even got its own spin-off series called Dash Dolls in 2015. Eventually, the Kardashians closed all three boutiques in 2018.

 

2010 - PerfectSkin™

Honestly, this brand that didn't even survive a year deserves a special mention in the list of the most disastrous celebrity brands in history. Some quotes from the sisters, published in PR Newswire, say that this three-function skincare product is "the only product they use'. A very fast comet star that hit the ground before most were even aware of it.

 

2010 - The Kardashian Kard

What could be missing at this point, other than a prepaid debit card called Kardashian Kard? After launching the website, announcing the fees and providing all the relevant information, the card was quickly taken off the market due to heavy criticism. The main accusation was that the card had extremely high fees, according to the official website, and that the victims were young teenagers, as the marketing was clearly aimed at this age group. After CNN, several newspapers and government representatives voiced their concerns about the product, the card was officially withdrawn from the market.

An all-Kardashian gift shop with exorbitant prices - such as a bottle of water for 8 euros - at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas promised fans that they could even meet their idols in the shop if they were lucky. Unfortunately, given the price of the merchandise and dwindling demand, everything had to be sold for less than half the original price and the shop was closed once and for all.

Now it's the turn of the two younger sisters, the Jenners of the family, who first worked with PacSun in 2012 to launch their brand Kendall + Kylie. According to the website, three years later the sisters collaborated with TopShop "to design a series of capsule collections, all inspired by the Californian flair. What was meant to be a collaboration has evolved into a full clothing brand aimed at teens and young adults, offering accessories and clothing priced between $20 and $200. The brand was already in crisis, sparked by numerous criticisms of a controversial T-shirt collection featuring the faces of musicians such as Tupac and Biggie in 2017. Teen Vogue had reported on it, and the whole thing was done without legally inquiring about the possibility of using the images.

The humble and forgotten forerunner of a series of successful beauty brands that the Reality family later launched. Khroma Beauty was launched in 2012 as an exclusive line on ULTA, but the products were quickly pulled from the shelves. Several brands sued Khroma Beauty for copyright infringement, claiming the brand name was too close to pre-existing brand names. Khroma Beauty tried to keep the name until the sisters lost the legal battle and decided to rename the brand Kardashian Beauty. The trouble did not end there, however. As their products grew in popularity and Kardashian Beauty's 3-in-1 hair styling iron even won an Allure Best of Beauty Award in 2015, more legal problems arose that eventually led to the closure.

If you didn't have Kimoji in your iMessage either, you're lying. The Kimoji app offered Apple users a choice of over 250 Kim Kardashian-themed emoji and animated GIFs to use when sending messages. For US$1.99, users could access iconic symbols representing emoji tailored to the Kardashian trend, as well as Kim's crying face, hearts, donuts and kisses. The app was shut down in 2018 as it didn't prove profitable enough to justify the numerous legal issues it faced, including a $100 million lawsuit according to TMZ.

 

2017 – KKW Beauty & Fragrances

In June 2017, Kim finally showed how to achieve her famous sculpted cheekbones by launching a collection of contouring kits under the KKW Beauty brand. Months later, she expanded her beauty empire with perfumes that were sent to numerous celebrities and then promoted on Instagram. Both brands continued to grow, launching lipsticks, lip glosses, eyeshadow palettes and perfume collaborations with family members. In an interview with Women's Wear Daily, Kim even shared that sales of both brands doubled in one year. Despite the bright outlook, Kim has decided to take a break from KKW Beauty and "return with an entirely new brand, with more modern, innovative formulas and in new luxurious and sustainable packaging," she wrote in a tweet. Fans have speculated that the rebranding is related to Kim's divorce from Kanye West, as she wants to drop the 'W' from the KKW name, as it stands for 'West'.

Last but not least, we introduce you to the sock brand of Robert Kardashian, who has kept a low profile for many years, but in 2012 decided to open the sock brand "Arthur George" with different prints. The brand name is a combination of his middle name and his grandfather's name. The company survived for years thanks to the collaboration with his sisters and mother until it closed in 2020.
