A love letter between mother and daughter

Carta a Mi Madre para mi hiho, the latest Miu Miu Women's Tales project A love letter between mother and daughter

Since 2012, Miu Miu has entrusted the most intense and original contemporary female authors to create short films that explore femininity in the 21st century. The project, called Miu Miu Women's Tales, has over the years involved talents such as Chloë Sevigny, Juno Temple, Vanessa Kirby, Liliana Cavani, Tessa Thompson and, for its most recent title, Spanish director Carla Simón, winner of the Golden Bear at the 72nd Berlinale with Alcarràs - The Last Harvest, about the disappearance of the traditional work of peach picking in Catalonia. Presented during Venice Days at the Venice Film Festival (along with Janicza Bravo's House Comes with a Bird), Carta a mi madre para mi hijo is a multi-voice dialogue between mothers and daughters, between those who were, those who are and those who have been, in which future, present and past are intertwined in the name of love and family. Paraphrasing the title of the short film, Simón's work, is a love letter, made up of fragmented, touching images in which real memories and imaginary ones from the past are mixed together, which, put together, remind us that understanding who we are is a process that takes a lifetime and which, at times, appears clear only to those who come after us, such as our children. Throughout the film we see Carla, pregnant and naked, just as in the photos in which her mother poses pregnant with her; Super 8 footage of grandparents, uncles, aunts, fathers, and great-grandparents smiling, sewing, or reciting poetry; and then a young woman growing up from the 1960s to the present day until she meets Carla, pregnant, on the picturesque, bright Catalan coast. Giving the faces to this fictional family are Ángela Molina, famous for working with directors such as Luis Buñuel, Pedro Almodóvar, Bigas Lunas and Ridley Scott; Cecilia Gómez, known for her roles in Domingo, La peste and Down There (Allí abajo); and Ainet Jounou, who also acted for Carla Simón in Alcarràs.

As of September 5, Carta a mi madre para mi hijo will be visible not only on Miu Miu's social channels, but also, globally, streamed on MUBI.
