Douyin eyes: make your eyes appear bigger
The trick for a deep and super defined look
May 5th, 2025
You know those big, glossy, slightly dreamy eyes that are trending all over TikTok and Instagram? They’re called douyin eyes, a make-up trend that originated in Asia—particularly in South Korea, China, and Japan—but has since become hugely popular among Western beauty creators as well. The goal is to use make-up to create the illusion of deeper, larger-looking eyes.

The douyin look is all about the eye make-up and the details around the eye area. Start with a thin line of eyeliner that visually elongates the eye outward, but with a twist: instead of flicking upwards like a classic cat eye, the line slightly dips down at the outer corner, creating a softer, deeper effect. Next, apply a brown eyeshadow along the lower lash line, connecting it to the eyeliner. This step helps define the shape of the eye and further elongates it. To enhance the “big eye” effect, blend a darker shadow just underneath to mimic the look of aegyo sal, a technique that creates the illusion of under-eye puffiness. Finish with lashes: curl them well, apply mascara, and complete the look with individual false lashes for extra volume.
Lenses, brows, and other small details
If you want to take the look a step further, try circle lenses: slightly larger contact lenses that visually enlarge and deepen the appearance of the eyes. Eyebrows also play a key role in the douyin make-up look. The best shape is natural, slightly straight or gently arched, without overly defined or harsh lines. They should frame the eyes, not overpower them. To finish the look and make the eyes appear even more open and bright, add a highlight to the inner corner of the eye using a shimmer eyeshadow or a touch of highlighter—a simple but super effective detail.
