World Water Day, let's save our waters

March 22nd is World Water Day, here's how to help everyday our oceans & co

Approaching sustainability is not immediate. Disposable plastic is still everywhere, even there are those who do not try in the least. Thus, simple things like using metal straws, paying attention to separate collection and not throwing waste into the sea, have not yet entered human habits. Yet we must hurry, the ultimatum to keep the planet a habitable place for all is 2025. So brands do not stop in their intention to raise awareness and remember how much a daily gesture can make a difference on a global scale. Think about it: billions of water bottles are sold every year, of which 90% are not recycled after use.

But all, together, we can be the solution, responding to the call of the United Nations and thus celebrate World Water Day, which is based on the importance of water and the sustainable management of its resources. And just 7 women, presented by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, are here as an example. Extraordinary women, who defend the ocean to talk about female scientific research, aimed at promoting gender equity also in the marine science sector.

"Each of them represents one of the seven results expected from the Decennio del Mare, dedicated to building the ocean we wantcleanhealthy and resilientproductivepredictablesafe and accessible, but also an ocean that inspires and involves. We also want to remember this on the occasion of World Water Day, which this year focuses on the theme of valuing water, creating a connection between this element and people, and underlining the importance of water in all aspects of life and need to manage this irreplaceable but finite resource with extreme care". - explains Francesca Santoro, IOC program specialist.

They are Anne de Carbuccia, environmental artist and filmmaker who, with works like her short film One Ocean, tries to give a voice to our blue planet. Arianna Mancuso is a biologist and diver, researcher at the University of Bologna who, thanks to the National Geographic Early Career Grant, carried out a project to understand the effects of sea acidification on calcifying marine organisms in the underwater crater of Panarea. Bonetta dell'Oglio, is president of Donne di Mare and chef of the Slow Food Italy alliance, and is committed to the enhancement of biodiversity and the defense of organic cuisine, all told in her book Romanzo culinario. Ida Caracciolo, judge of the Court of the Sea, instead fights to protect and restore the biodiversity and vitality of the ocean. Roberta Ivaldi, professor at the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy, has developed an integrated 3D mapping to see the transparency of the water. Simona Masina, a researcher at the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, cares about the training of young researchers, with the aim of educating them to increasingly accurate forecasts. Claudia Pasquero, professor of oceanography and atmospheric physics, works on the interactions between ocean dynamics and marine ecosystems, for a safe ocean. Why do we tell you about these women? Like them, we can start making a difference. Except that practically no effort is required of us, compared to theirs. Remember well the teaching of Olaf, the nice snowman from Frozen: water has a memory, it can keep the memory of the substances with which it has come into contact. And who knows, he'll probably even remember those who had more respect than others.

There are many brands who love our seas, from beauty to the really clean one: think that with a solid shampoo you can do 80 to 100 washes and that 6.6 million solid shampoos are the equivalent of 19 million plastic bottles in less ended up in landfills or in the oceans; to fashion and lifestyle, with initiatives like Aquatic Creatures by Riccardo Capuzzo, allied with the non-profit organization Whale and Dolphin Conservation; and also Acqua Foundation, an international charity that operates in the field of art with projects focused on the theme of water protection and conservation. Together with artists Anna Nazaretskaia and Daria Elkina, she launched Alteration Space, a digital project aimed at combating the environmental impact of the fast fashion industry. The project aims to raise public awareness of the environmental damage and pollution caused by "disposable" fashion.
