Here's the official trailer of Gossip Girl's reboot Everything we know (so far) about the 2021 version of the cult tv series

You’ve gotten so comfortable thinking you’re in control of your image, your actions, the narrative. But you forgot one thing - I can see you, and before I’m through, I’ll make sure you see you too. XOXO, Gossip Girl.

With these few words Kristen Bell, the iconic narrator voice of in the original version, introduces the first official trailer for the Gossip Girl reboot, released last weekend by HBO Max.

Just a few images of the new cast and the promise of new intrigue against the backdrop of the Upper East Side are enough to make curiosity skyrocket. To find out what will happen in the new episodes we will have to wait a few more months, but we can console ourselves by summarizing everything we know so far about the reboot of Gossip Girl.

The MET steps will still be the place to be

No more Serena van der Woodsen, no more Blair Waldorf or Chuck Bass. Now there is a new generation of teenagers on the steps of the MET. They are the cast of Gossip Girl's reboot, shown in a series of shots traveling around the world, in the most popular location of the original series.

Earlier this year, Whitney PeakEli BrownEvan MockEmily Alyn Lind, Thomas DohertyJordan AlexanderZion Moreno and Savannah Lee Smith were spotted in New York City shooting the 2020 version of the iconic HBO show, not only the return of a ritual now entered the collective imagination of millions of fans, ie Leighton Meester and her court of girls chatting in front of the entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The cast

The full cast of HBO Max's Gossip Girl reboot has been unveiled with a series of "portraits" of the characters on the show's official Instagram page. In addition to the names and nicknames, a mini description has been revealed for each of the characters, made up of a single keywordGraceambitioninfluencestyleinnocencefreedomperspectivepower and privilege are the words assigned to each of the protagonists.

The most interesting characters in the 10 new episodes include Whitney Peak and Eli Brown as the protagonists, the Blair and Serena of 2020. And then Evan Mock, Emily Alyn Lind (who will be a teenager who's been partnered with her boyfriend for years, but who in the series begins to want to explore the world), Thomas Doherty (who is rumored to play Chuck and Blair's son), Jordan Alexander, Zion Moreno and Savannah Lee Smith. Will any of the actors in GG OG be featured? We hope so.

The looks

The images that have come up on IG in recent months gave us some anticipation of the looks of the new protagonists. The school uniforms remain, but cool details are added such as white high-heeled boots, sandals worn with socks, sneakers, miniskirts, but also power suits, evening dresses, silver metallic dresses, vest with high-waisted pants and tweed suits.

In a long interview with Variety, costume designer Eric Daman, who is also behind the iconic outfits worn by Serena and Blair, said:

If you’re a fan, hopefully you’ll go into it with an open mind, and you should see it to see the evolution of it. I think a lot of people think “reboot” [means] we’re going to see a new Serena, a new Blair, but that’s not what it is. When I read the first script — it’s fresh but it’s so smart. I was right back in it; it reels you right back in. [...] But really, if I want to be cheeky about it, everyone should watch it to watch the clothes.

The plot

Here are the official anticipations:

Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the authors of the sequel, the same creators of the 2000's TV series, reveal that the story will be set about 10 years after the events of the original Gossip Girl and will revolve around a group of kids studying at the prestigious Constance Billard School. It seems that this time there won't be a new blogger controlling everyone's lives, but there will be more focus on diversity, inclusion and, above all, there will be talk about how the new generations communicate through smartphones and use platforms like Twitter, Facebook, sharing news and gossip about school and friends.

The release date

The Gossip Girl reboot release will air in the States beginning July 8, 2021 on HBO Max, but it's not known yet which platform will stream it in Italy. If you want to re-watch the old episodes you can find them all on Netflix.
