Not only Rihanna in goth version, Billie Eilish and her fifities diva outfit or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with her statement dress. At the Met Gala 2021, one of the most interesting looks was that of Grimes. The artist walked the red carpet with an outfit inspired by Dune and Frank Herbert's novel, the new screen adaptation starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. Every detail had been carefully designed in collaboration with stylist Turner Turner to reflect the sci-fi mood of the movie, starting from the dress, a custom-made model by Iris van Herpen called Bene Gesserit featuring a nude bodice with lightning pattern in liquid silicone and 26 meters of hand-pleated shaded silk.

The make-up created by Natasha Severino, which combined graphic eyeliner with pearls and crystals, was perfect for a modern and very elegant warrior princess. As well as the accessories: from Marc Jacobs' lavender platform boots to Chris Habana's shiny silver metal mask, from Lillian Shalom's elf-style ear cuffs to the small luminous book the singer held in her hands or the sword she brandished in front of the photographers' flashes. That weapon, one of the most unusual and fascinating gadgets ever seen during the Met Gala, has a very interesting story. Originally it was, in fact, a Colt AR-15 rifle that the MSCHF collective has converted into a medieval sword as part of Guns2Swords, a project that tries to respond in a semi-serious way to the problem of gun control in the United States, artistically revisiting the gun buyback projects. Grimes' look for the latest Met Gala impressed everyone, and made she enter into the list of best fashion moments of the night, offering those who knew the 30-year-old Canadian only for being Elon Musk's partner a taste of her personal style.

Since she first hit the music scene in 2010 with her alter-ego Grimes, Claire Elise Boucher stands out as one of the most interesting and versatile artists of her generation. In the last ten years she has she has written, sung and produced 5 albums that include a series of indie electro-pop tracks as futuristic and cool as Oblivion, a hit that Pitchfork placed second among the 200 Best Songs of the 2010s. Her sound? The best definition comes from the Wall Street Journal described it as "the kind of music you imagine a group of vampires would listen to if this group of vampires also happened to be on a cheerleading squad." The only things guiding her on her path are her love for art and a DIY attitude, so much strength that is rumored she recorded Visions, the album that made her a star, entirely by herself, in less than a month, locked in a room, supported only by GarageBand software, a jar of amphetamines and the food her friends brought her.

Grimes' world is not only made of conceptronica and beats, but it is a multifaceted universe in which music, visual arts and fashion are mixed. Her cultural references range from anime to Bollywood movies, from superheroes to fantasy franchises, from Sailor Moon to Game of Thrones, from Tolkien to Philip K. Dick, from manga to Charles Burnes and Daniel Clowes comics, from Matthew Barney's works to cyberpunk, from artificial intelligence to the '90s. This sort of aesthetic vocabulary goes perfectly with her alien, almost supernatural appearance, which makes her look like some sort of hybrid between e-girl and woodland elf and according to some she recalls "Wednesday Addams on her way to a rave". Many of Grimes style highlights come from the 90s ravers such as multicolored hair, short bangs, creepers or band tees, which, over time, have been integrated with others coming from the world of fantasy such as graphic makeup, pointed ears, ethereal dresses such as Iris Van Herpen's beautiful Met Gala 2021 outfit or the Suminagashi dress, also by the Dutch designer, worn for the video of the single Violence.

Album after album, Grimes or, as she prefers to be called nowadays, simply c (written in italics, lowercase, like the symbol of the speed of light) captivated not only the fans of electronics, but also several big brands that, conquered by her sense of style, have chosen to dress her or hire her as an ambassador.  Some names? Chanel, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton, Rodarte. Grimes' interest in fashion is always coherent with the inspirations behind her art, from the relationship between body and machine to science fiction, but with an eye towards contemporary issues such as sustainability. It's the same "c" told Vogue:

Fashion is also the means by which the human body, one’s literal bodily presence, can become a piece of art, so I take it very seriously. Early in my career I mostly got stuff from the Salvation Army and would often modify it. I went through a period of not caring. Now I’m hyper focused on it, but I’m also very focused on sustainability. These things are at odds. Finding a way to be fashionable whilst reducing my footprint is a huge goal. I describe my style as medieval futurist, elven technocrat, or rococo sci-fi and my favorite designers are Iris Van Herpen, Charlotte Knowles London and Hyein Seo.

Her talent in music and her relationship with Elon Musk have thrown Grimes into the spotlight, but after her recent appearance at the Met Gala everyone is wondering what look the singer will amaze us in the future.
